FPDL Safety Checklist
Safety
Safety is everyone’s responsibility whether it involves your project or not. If at anytime you see an unsafe act let the responsible party or group know they are performing an unsafe act and report the incident to the Projects & Resources Coordinator/Support Technician immediately (Sean Schell, sss38@cornell.edu—255.8798)
Note: In any issue involving personnel safety, the Pilot Plant Manager has the authority to deny access to the facilities until the issue is satisfactorily resolved.
General safety considerations:
Use common sense and work carefully at all times. Try to prevent an incident from happening—think before you act. If you do not know how to use equipment….ASK.
If you will be working outside of normal business hours (0800-1700) it is mandatory that two people must be in the facility in order to ensure safety. If this is for an outside project it is the responsibility of the client to provide an additional person until the work and cleaning is completed, if they are not available the pilot plant manager can hire an additional person if needed providing there is adequate notice.

| Utilities | Y | N | N/A |
| Is water to be used? (the pilot plant floor has a high probability of being wet and slippery, it is your responsibility to wear adequate shoes to minimize that chance of falling) Water is not to be sprayed on any motor or electrical outlet | | | |
| Will you be working with steam? Never assume a steam line is off, while connecting or disconnecting steam to a hose station or equipment ensure steam is shut off prior, if by chance steam is left on make sure you run cold water out of the hose to prevent being burned by condensation. It is the users responsibility to ensure the hose is not leaking and working properly, if not notify pilot plant manager immediately and discontinue operation until it is working properly. | | | |
| Are you trained on how to properly use the steam station? | | | |
| Is water, steam, or chilled water to be hooked up to a closed system (i.e. cheese vat, walker cone bottom processor, drum dryer, etc.) Are preventative measures in place to prevent over pressurizing the system and damaging the equipment? | | | |
