Two degrees are offered at the master's level in the Field of Food Science and Technology: the Master of Science (M.S.) and the Master of Professional Studies (agriculture) (M.P.S.). The M.S. is a research degree (thesis required) and prepares students for continuation to a Ph.D. program or for research and development positions. The M.P.S. is a professional degree designed for persons who are already in a professional career, but desire to upgrade their skills and knowledge (for a brochure outlining the M.P.S. program, click here). Less emphasis is placed on research in the M.P.S. program than in the M.S. or Ph.D. programs. Students in the M.P.S. program do carry out an applied project but are not required to submit a traditional research thesis. However, they must submit a project report. The graduate field of food science and technology also offers the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.
Newly developed to begin in August 2008, Food Science at Cornell has partnered with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in India to offer students in India and the USA a dual master's degree program. Selected students will earn a M.P.S in Food Science from Cornell and a M.Tech (Master of Technology) in Food Processing and Marketing from TNAU.
